Parts Lists - Use of the word "off" against Quantity

What is the origin of using the word "off" next to quantity in engineering circles? As in "part x - 2 off". Is this correct? If not a good way of doing this I'm assuming it's acceptable phrasing.

Sorry if this has been asked before but i couldn't find anything in the search function. Not easy to use on my phone.

Re: Parts lists - use of the word "off" against quantity?

Its very typical to use 'Off' in assembly drawings and BoM, when a general part used in the assembly is used at several places., like bolt, nut, washer, lock washer, .. etc.

Re: Parts lists - use of the word "off" against quantity?

It's what I've always used but i got asked about it and it got me looking into its origins. Google just comes up with a lot of comments that engineers use it but it is using wrong grammar. More grammar nerds than engineers online it seems!
