Party Prince Harry hits America

Just seems news piece here about Prince Harry visiting USA. Seems when he got shown around some place in Washington by Senator John McCain with a load of young girls screaming to see him.

It went on to say he's been gaining credibility/respect due to his Arlington visit from veterans. The first time a serving, senior royal has done so in full uniform having seen two tours in Afghanistan.

My question is directed at the American members of the forum. Any of you give a [email protected]? Are British royals of any interest to americans even if they are visiting Capitol hill and White House? I guess some veterans on here might see his Arlington cemetery visit to show respect to a US soldier and Major General Orde at their grave sides. Orde was a British officer and hero of Burma in WWII.

I'm only curious as UK press used to make a big deal in the past but less so now. Only strip billiards in Vegas raises the red top's pulses.

I don't care, but then I don't care about any American celebrity either. I did not know he was even visiting the US, but then I live in the Western side (not in California) so we are the ignored red-headed step child of America :tg:.

I have similar views about the royals. I only posted because I've been curious if anyone your side of the pond actually have any interest. There's some in press here who make out they have a fan base in America.

I think a lot of people here in the US are very much "fans" of the English Royal Family. I just doubt you'll find many, if any, here in these forums.

I like the fact that instead of doing nothing but boozing, whoring and snorting both he and his brother have been trying to give something back to his country...Unlike most of our "royalty" (the rich, famous, Kardasian, Hilton, Kennedy, Hollywood, and other rich and famous types)

FWIW:
I note the two brothers actually perform real soldiering. That deserves some respect. Who gives a damn if a guy who has actually puts his life on the line has some party time? - I've visited more than a few R&R locations over the last 50 years and any escapades of these two brothers are far milder than some I've seen, especially one Army Ranger who wrecked a bar and two guys because one of the two asked, "How many kids did you kill in "Nam?"

Indeed. Both young men are very accomplished in their respective careers. William flies a search and rescue helicopter and Harry has seen active service as a helo pilot too. The USA doesn't have "royalty" except for the rich and famous, as Randy suggests. Hollywood offers nothing similar.

Many (thinking) Americans I know have a true admiration for the UK's Royal Family, their traditions and the associated ceremony. No one does it better.

William is a trained SAR pilot. He is currently based in RAF Valley on Anglesey where he can provide SAR support in a wide range of seas and land areas. The services they provide are both military and civilian rescue, for free at point of need. The UK based service to civilians does not rely on funding from insurance as it is deemed by the RAF/Navy as being valuable training for their real role on either naval vessels or in war zones.

However, as second in line to the throne William is very much unlikely to see active service in a war zone unlike many doing what he is. Is that playing at it do you think?? I don't as it is still risky even if it is only rescue in British hills in storms and winter. That is dangerous enough as it sea rescues.

Harry however is only third in line. It is quite common that the third in line performs active service in war zones. Harry served recently as an apache navigator I believe. Before that he nearly completed a full tour as an infantry officer. He was not far of completing it when a French newspaper ignored requests for secrecy on this matter and published the story. he got lifted out quickly to his disgust. A sign of his character that he re-trained and got his helo pilots licence later to get out to do a full tour.

Other third in line military successes include Prince Andrew (Charlie boy's brother). He was a helicopter pilot in the Falklands conflict. One of their tactics to protect the ships from the Argentine's French supplied Exocet missiles was to hover above and to the front of the ships on detection of the missile launch. Then at the last minute they would power up and as fast as they could gain height while trying to make themselves a better target for the missiles. You can imagine the numbers of helicopters and their crew lost their life with this tactic.

Anyway, I think you can tell I have a lot of respect for those armed servicemen and women who do the job in other parts of the world so I don't have to. I do not however have respect for anyone who plays at it. I feel Prince Charles did that and to a lesser extent I think William is. He will never get a posting in Afghanistan for example unlike other SAR pilots and crew. he does the job in UK territories and international waters surrounding those territories. That is why I think he is not completely playing at it.

I also respect the institution as it represents this end of a long line of history and tradition developed all the way back to the end of the Romano Britain era. I just don't see their merit is as it was say in Medieval times when they fought for their nation.
