Performance of ISO 9001 certified vs. non-certified manufacturing companies

I can't find anything in the way of the search tool.

Does anyone have good articles, case studies or abstracts that have studies the performance of ISO (or AS, IATF) registered companies vs. a company that is not registered?

Looking for some good material and data. I have a few, but interest in more.

thanks

I'm interested in what you you found... I've never even attempted to sell ISO9001 based on potential business performance improvements.

A very old saying is that an ISO registered company can still may crappy product, slowly and expensively...
but hopefully more consistently.

Analysis of ISO 9001 certification benefits in Brazilian companies

Registration versus non-registration may compare the marketing benefits of certification rather than the more meaningful benefits of an organization working to the requirements of ISO 9001 or not?

I could find no results of research answering this more important (imho) question.
The marketing is the easy part; in my case these days it is a contractual obligation. So beyond the marketing.

As you note - the benefit is the hard part. In general, what I have found is that there is some empirical evidence to show tangible performance benefits for those companies that fully subscribe and use it to their advantage. Some elements are more obvious than others.

And seeking justification for the value of planning, training or calibrating measuring devices, etc… suggests a lack of the heart necessary for a sustained commitment to quality.

My experience is that on average, ISO9001/AS9100 certified companies tend to be a little better than non-certified companies, but there are certainly individual exceptions.

Maybe. But I have instances where an org is committed to quality, is conforming to all the requirements and its quality is very robust. The 'value' of paying for the registration/certification simply makes no 'practical' sense. (no requirement, etc).

Having seen many registrars in action - the value add becomes negligible.

For the record, I am trying to do this as my own study. From all past studies or documents I have read, there is either nothing to substantiate the value or there is too much that it makes it far too complicated.

There are so many variables.....quantifying the difference in a valid, scientific fashion is hard.

I will say one of the best companies I ever saw from a quality perspective had "only" a MIL-I-45208A QMS at the time. This was 20 years ago, but they had been in business 90 years and were consistently better than their peers who had ISO9001 QMS. They are still in business and have, out of necessity, gone the AS route (customer demands).

The worst companies I ever saw from a quality perspective had an ISO9001 or AS9100 cert and yet were pathetic, and I mean that seriously.
