Re: Need an opinion on Permissible Exclusions.

I do not have a copy of the standard. I am going by a template that I purchased from a company that supplies them for a do-it-yourself implementation. Would it be adventageous to purchase a copy of the standard?
Do you know who your registering body is going to be? If so, you can try requesting a copy of the standard from them (as a "perk" for doing business with them). This worked for us: they bought us a copy.

We are also taking the 7.3 exclusion (our Stage 1 registration audit is scheduled for next week)...

Excluding 7.5.5 Preservation of product

I think I am about to have an argument with an assessor over the exclusion of this clause.

My client wires up traffic signals.

It is true that we purchase materials for doing this work but our product is ..... wiring up traffic signals.

My thoughts on the application of this clause are:

I make something.
I check/test it.
There is a delay in giving it to client and so.....
I protect the product so that my check/test is still valid.

Mike,

I am puzzled. Exactly why are each of these requirements irrelevant to your client's product?

"7.5.5 Preservation of product

The organization shall preserve the product during internal processing and delivery to the intended destination in order to maintain conformity to requirements.

As applicable, preservation shall include identification, handling, packaging, storage and protection. Preservation shall also apply to the constituent parts of a product."

...or are you talking about excluding 7.4 Purchasing?

Many thanks,

John

So you have to look after the traffic signals and all other materials e.g. cable, any other purchased material, etc. all the way from receipt, though processing to handover. If the material is 'customer property' you still have to 'preserve the product' but additionally. you need to tell the customer if there are any problems with the product.

What is the Product

I agree with clause on customer property applying but it still comes back to the definition of the product.

The product is not stuff we buy in, it is the work we do.

So we wire up the traffic light, turn it on and test it, write out a certificate of compliance and hand it back to the customer.

Can't see where preservation of product applies.

Does the traffic light belong to you or the customer? Either way, there is potential for damage or loss during the period in which you are wiring and testing it and also transporting it between you and them so 7.5.5 wants you to take appropriate actions to prevent this damage or loss.

Would the customer be ticked off it you lost/damaged it while you were working on the thing? It's a bit like taking your car to the dealer to have it serviced. Do you expect them to work on it and not make it dirty inside etc? In other words, you want them to preserve it in the condition you gave it to them, having done whatever work needed doing, right?

You're missing the point. The work you do is on the customer's property.

Anyone would expect you to take due care of the customer's property while it is in your hands/under your care/on your premises. That's all the clause is saying.

You don't seriously think it would be OK (for example) to return a set of traffic signals back to a customer with a broken light (say) and saying, sorry, dunno how that happened, but lookee here, we have fixed the problem and here's your certificate of compliance.
