Re: Permissible Exclusions - ISO9001 - Need an opinion

Hello everyone,

I work for a small CNC machining company and am responsible for our implementation of ISO 9001: 2000. We do not "design" any of the products we produce. The items that we produce come from blueprints that are provided by our customers. At no point in the job (item that we manufacture) are we allowed to stray from the blueprint. Therefore, I feel that we should write a "Permissible Exclusion" for the design and development section of the standard.

My question is: Knowing that, would that be allowed? AND, how do you go about writing an exclusion for that?

I appreciate any response! And apologize in advance for seeming clueless. :truce:

One last question and then I'll be out of everyone's proverbial "hair"... for now.;)

What would you include/exclude from Section 1.2 of a quality manual? Would you just list the section that you are excluding? Or would you include that PLUS your verbiage for the exclusion? Thank you Covers! (you have been a big help so far!!!)

You might read
N524 - Guidance on ISO 9001:2000 Sub-clause 1.2 'Application' for guidance.

And, while you are at it, you might also peruse
N525 - Guidance on the Documentation Requirements of ISO 9001:2000
N526 - Guide to the Terminology used in ISO 9001:2000 and ISO 9004:2000
N544 - Guidance on the Concept and Use of the Process Approach for management systems
N630 - Guidance on Outsourced Processes

I would not normally address 1.2 in the manual as such, I usually address the 'requirements' aspects of the standard plus some 'up front' stuff.

I have attached the front few pages of a recent manual for information which I have had to change a bit to de-personalise it. Hope it helps.

Regardless of where you document it, you must list the exclusion and the justification for excluding it. Can't just list the exclusion.

Thank you Sidney! I have read a few things so far that answered my question. I didn't do a very good job at explaining what I was trying to do and why, but you seemed to hit the nail on the head for me... like maybe you understood my vagueness? :)

Just a clarification on what I was actually trying to exclude...

At our company, we do not do D&D. I have written a permissable exclusion in section 7.3 of our QM. All I needed to know was, besides listing the exclusion in section 1.2, do I need to add the verbiage that I wrote for section 7.3?

I think Sidney knew what I was getting at. ;) But would still value other opinions!

Oh - you're numbering your manual like the standard. I guess I'd note the clause number excluded and the justification in the 1.2 section and then just put "7.3 - Excluded see 1.2" or something where 7.3 would be.

YES! Thanks! That will be a much more simple way of communicating that we are excluding this element from our QM. Makes much more sense. Kind of a "Why didn't I think of that?" moment... lol! :bonk:

If you have no exclusions, can you exclude 1.2? :D (We need a little running-around-in-circles smiley.)
