Re: Pest Control Activities

Hello Pearla,

A little more information is needed before your question can be answered in full. Is pest control something that your organisation offers as a service? Does this relate to ISO 9001 certification or something else?

For example, I work for a council here in England and we are ISO9001 registered. One of the sections covered by this is Pest Control and, as such, we have a number of Pest Control work instructions in place (e.g. Rats in buildings, Cockroaches in buildings, Fleas, Wasps and bees, Pharoah's ants, Baiting of sewer manholes for rats etc).

Regards,

Mick

Hi Mick, thanks for the reply!

We're a medical device company undergoing audit for ISO 13485. Our consultant have advised us to engage a pest control company for fogging of our cleanroom and surrounding premises. However, we have not seen any requirements that states this.

Welcome to the Cove :bigwave:

I think 2 issues are getting mixed here -

first is Pest Control for facility, which is typically done for the exteriors of your plant and

second is fogging of the clean rooms. The fogging that is refered here for the clean rooms relates to chemical sterilants to bring down the bioburden of the clean rooms. Some of the fogging agents used are formaldehyde but being carcinogenic and posing safety hazards, most organizations do not use them. Many organizations use other chemical substitutes like chlorine dioxide, hydrogen peroxide etc.

Hi Pearla,

Given your reply, it looks like Ajit is correct - I think we're talking about 2 entirely different issues here. If so, I'm afraid I won't be of much use to you, though I would imagine there will be someone on the forum in a position to offer you advice.

Regards,

Mick

I've never heard of fogging of cleanrooms for pest control, and probably not a good idea.

Generally, you want to keep any contaminates away from your production area, pest chemicals especially considering the fact that you introducing a contaminant to your device that sterilization cannot correct.

Pest control is typically regulated to outside of the building, warehouse and general office space.

Fogging for disinfection of a cleanroom is a different story and still not a good idea to have a pest control company do that for you.:bonk:

From just general observation of your posts, I would question whether or not you need to find another auditor.

'Pest control' a wrong word perhaps. As a part of the planned maintenance activities of a clean room, fogging is a bioburden reduction / control activity. This must be followed by your bioburden monitoring as well.
