Petrol (Gasoline) Prices Around the World - Part Deux 2008

I just paid $2.699 this morning on my way into work. Down $0.10 from yesterday's price

.99/6 cents = ~80cent USD
L into Gallons = 3.8L/G

No, not just USA prices. I like the fact that oil has dropped 65% but prices just 27%. It doesn't jive. It sounds more like it was a ruse to get more margin than anything...

Prices around the world gives a better perspective of the world economy IMHO. I'm sure that in Arab countries and South America the price is lower but that is opinion based on items I've seen over the last few years. I know that last year I saw a segment on TV where Venezuela had a price of $.12/gallon (or maybe that was liter) but shows how much we are getting shafted worldwide.

There is a two to four week lag time between oil price (barrel of crude oil) and refined gasoline at the pump, after transport to refinery, refining, transport to tank farms, transport to service station (where it reflects all the transport and refining costs PLUS transportation costs PLUS profit for every step in the chain PLUS taxes imposed by federal. state, and local political subdivisions.

Currently, within ten air miles of my house (driving miles are about 15 because of rivers and lakes in between), the gas prices for regular unleaded (cash) range from $2.79 to $3.29. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to the pricing which could be accounted for by brand name of station or geographic location. One town (Waukegan) has a Citgo selling gas at $2.79 and less than 1/2 mile down the same street (still within Waukegan) the same brand had a price of $3.19, while the BP (British Petroleum - normally one of the highest priced brands) on the next block from the $3.19 Citgo was selling its gas at $3.13! My own town (3 mile radius) ranges from $3.13 to $3.29.

What about diesel?!!
Tell me what diesel fuel for autos costs in your town compared to gasoline. In my area, fewer than half the stations sell diesel for autos and the price disparity (diesel is ALWAYS higher) ranges from $0.50 to $0.80 per gallon. Therefore, a Mobil station at the south end of town is selling regular, unleaded gasoline at $3.19 and diesel at $3.79.

I gassed up at $2.999 yesterday morning at the locally-owned gas station near my work. First time below $3/gallon since March, and about 10 cents higher then this time last year.

On the way home it was $2.979.

This morning it was $2.959.

What about diesel?!!

Yesterday when unleaded gasoline was $2.979, diesel was $3.499.

What kind of MPG do diesel automobiles get? I assume that's the appeal of using diesel but I've never looked into it.

Diesel runs at least $.70/gallon higher and in most case $.90.

Remember when deisel was always cheaper than gas??????? What changed? Isn't diesel less refined and therefore not as much work put into making it?

This birngs to mind a small city in the burbs of KC called Sugar Creek. Amoco had a refinery there forever then BP took over. There are many citizens who have acquired brain cancer. My grandfather worked there 40+ years and died of cancer in several places.

They bought out several streets of housing due to dumping close to these homes and there have been several lawsuits that they have paid over all of this.

Supply and demand deisel was cheaper than gas, deisel motors had more power and durability, add the turbo-charger higher performance, people started buying more deisel powered cars, trucks, etc etc.... ergo deisel fuel prices skyrocketed.

Yeah, what he said. I remember the year that those deisel prices skyrocketted to meet the gasoline prices. I was driving a big deisel back in the days when I was still raising, training and showing horses. It nearly bankrupted me to be on the road. We were seeing all kinds of deisel engine cars being imported and sold because they got better mileage, prices for deisel were lower (until everyone bought a deisel, lol) and the engines were better, lasted longer, and cheaper to maintain. (as long as your nephew was a deisel mechanic, anyway!)
