:lmao: That was great Andy.

:horse: They had a special on this weekend about folks going back to using horses to get around.

It takes 2.5 tanks of gas to get me back and forth to work each week. It's running about $60 a week. Any more and I'll rent a place close to work and drive home for the weekends....kinda what Andy said :singtome:
That is a Long Trip from St Joe to (I assume) KC. I lived in St Joe for awhile and worked in KC. It was about a 70 Mile trip or 1 hour drive each way.

Let's talk about cost per passenger mile!

Joining the thread late - if the topic is already discussed, I apologize in advance:

In the Chicago metropolitan area, various van pool programs seem to be going merrily along, despite (or maybe because of) the horrendous price increase in fuel.

I'm attaching an old (but still relatively valid) study about types of van programs as a starter read for those of you who may have sufficient potential riders going to and from certain destinations to help you consider whether to explore such a van pool program for your situation.
(As a government report, this document is in the public domain and does not claim copyright!)

The two main advantages I see in this "semi-public" mode of commuting versus self-driving or public transportation are:

  1. cost per passenger mile is much lower than private drive and about the same or only a little more than public transportation
  2. routing and scheduling are usually more convenient than public transport and may contribute to a lessening of traffic congestion by keeping vehicles off the road which would otherwise be driven by van passengers
Obviously van pooling is not for everyone, but it will save wear and tear on one's personal vehicle and could even result in lower insurance costs if the annual mileage is reduced.

I'd be interested in learning if any of you have personal experience with van pooling or what your objections might be if you would not participate in one either as a driver (Free gas and maintenance! and some schemes even provide free vans!) or as a passenger.

I live in KC and commute to St. Joe. Have for about a year. Found a job that I love there. Wife has worked at same place for 29 yrs and family is in KC Metro so it would be difficult to move to St. Joe. Therefore, I commute. Bought a car that gets 32 mpg and installed 12 cd changer, 240 watt speakers, and 100w amp. I jam back and forth.:biglaugh::notme:

While I was checking for an address of a restaurant, I got referred to Mapquest and saw an icon on the Mapquest site for "gas prices."

http://gasprices.mapquest.com/

Problem is, the prices on the website have yesterday's date (validity date, I suppose), but when I checked for my area, all the reported prices were at least 10 cents and sometimes 20 cents too low compared to actual posted prices. (Yeah - I asked about yesterday's price as well.) When I checked other areas, I phoned some of the stations listed, and they, too, were also being reported at least ten cents lower than the actual pump price for either yesterday or today..

Thanks Palmer, I needed that!

Let's see, I I did a creative requisition to my neighbor's new VW Beetle, removed the body and sold it for scrap, I know where I can get a dune buggy body that needs the frame, engine, tranny, etc..... hey, this might work too. And I know that I'd still have to buy gas, but I wouldn't have to worry about stopping half way to work to recharge. :notme:
You just need a longer extension cord!:tg:
