PFMEA for Heat Treat Service Provider - Trying To Develop RPNs

Sorry to dredge this back up (not even sure how I ran across it ),but I just have to say that if my customer expects me to sort out the failures of his process, he's going to be paying a "pretty penny" for that "service".
As a special machine tool (assembly and test equipment) provider, Daimler-Chrysler has requested us to be part of their PFMEA creation. We have done so as we have found it value added when later designing our machines (simplifying, reducing costs, etc.) and performing our machinery FMEA. For example, we may suggest integrating a particular process step into one of our machines. They become more efficient. We make more money. To borrow a tired phrase, it's win-win.

I guess you just have to justify the expense in some way or another.

When that happens, I agree my PFMEA becomes a relatively simple excersize. We have recently begun to involve our suppliers/vendors when we need an outside source and it only helps the perspective on both sides to go that route. Only twice have our customers invited us to be part of their PFMEA for a new assembly line process. When we knew what their line was going to be doing we were able to input some suggestions (to both the part and their line) which have saved both companies big bucks, as well as, enhanced the "Customer Perception thing". :agree:

A lot of our products (most) are "older", taken over from a competitor, or transferred from different material to an aluminum casting. In most of these instances, the customer "talks the talk" but refuses to budge from his current means of assembling, even though a design or processing change would benefit both companies. It just seems to be something like "If you want this job, make it fit what I currently do". With a lot of parts changing from steel or iron into aluminum, many of the part designs are not conducive to die casting and, if we're not very careful, can end up with a "loser" ($$$$$). Frequently there is not enough lead time to perform a Flow Analysis or an FEA to truly understand what might happen with a "new" part (for us). Would that customers could be a little more sharing with their DFMEAs and PFMEAs---- but we've beaten that horse in other threads.

I don't think I'm expressing myself well enough (and I may try again ;) ), but this is the reasoning behind my "dredge up" post.
