I have a C = 0 Inspection Lot Size chart which states an inspection level of 0.65 for major characteristics and 2.50 for minor characteristics. Can someone please tell me what exactly these numbers signify and from where they are derived? Thanks!

Hi

I would assume they are from "Zero Acceptance Number Sampling Plans" - 4th ed, by Nicholas Squeglia. This is an alternative to more traditional sampling plans based on only accepting lots with zero defects.

You need to specify the Lot Size to determine how many items to inspect.

To understand how these are used and the maths behind them, you need to refer to Squeglia's book.

Refer to the last page in the attachment and find the table which says what sample size you need to pick for what lot size. Hope this helps ...
For your major characteristic go under the 0.65 AQL column and across your lot size range row and see what sample size you need to pick. Likewise for your minor you do under the 2.5 AQL column.
From the sample number you accept the lot only if you get no defectives for the characteristics you are looking. You may need to do 100% inspection if the table so directs you.

Thank you Somashekar. I do understand the usage of the table. What I need to understand and explain simply to management is from where the AQL numbers (ie 0.65/2.5) are derived and what these numbers actually mean. Thanks again!

Thanks Chris. You are correct in your assumption. Nick Squeglia actually does our internal audits hence the usage of C=0. I was hoping to get a quick answer but I guess I'll have to buy the book. (Nick will be pleased I'm sure!)

Lorgeo

These are the acceptable quality levels you could get statistically which are derived from the past inspection data and / or agreed upon with your supplier when several lots are being supplied for inspection and acceptance by sampling method.
If you use a sampling plan with 0.65 AQL and accepting a lot for a characteristic, you could expect to pass a lot having 0.65 or less % defects of that characteristic with a high probability.
As you have every chance to talk with Nick, I am sure his explanation of this and the complete plan will be the most apt ....
