here's likely the last comment I'll get from the auditor

Don't forget that the main important point is that all external person (customer, auditor..) must be able to understand your system after examination of your QM. Today with revision B it was nor the case.

My answer would be:

If the main important point is that external person be able to understand my system after reading the QM, then I assume that after reading it an audit won't be necessary. Or is it nor the case?

While that is a clever thought, an audit would still be necessary to determine whether you are actually following your system.

In any case, I am not sure the auditor was articulate. I would say the statement has some truth but not entirely correct.

I would love to find a new CB even if it prolongs the process for a couple of months. I even know who I would pick and what auditor I'd request. But I'm trying to make it work with these guys by giving a little on simple things and holding my ground on meaningful things.

Why? There are much better registrars. Randy and Sidney and I all represent much better CBs... why bother?

another example - ISO standards calls for documented procedures or reference to them in the QM... I chose to go with reference to them.
He wants the references in the manual to show the current revs.
I said no... the purpose of not putting the procedures in the manual was so that when I rev a procedure I don't have to rev the manual. Putting revs in the manual totally defeats that purpose.

You are absolutely correct. It sounds like the auditor is inexperineced, or worse, extremely narrow and prescriptive in his viewpoint.

I work peripherally with an auditor that does work for Sidney's CB at our other plant and I would much rather have her. She's great.
The main reason I'm "stuck" with these guys is that this registrar is also our notified body for CE marking and senior management felt it was better to use them. I was also in favor of it until July.

When we consolidate the two plants' registrations then we will likely go with a more local CB. (part of the problem I think is that our chosen one is based in Europe and has no office or auditors based in the US). That's a couple of years out though... probably when the other plant is up for recertification.

While that is a clever thought, an audit would still be necessary to determine whether you are actually following your system.

That was my point, of course--that the audit is necessary to the full understanding of a system, which includes whether or not it actually works.
