Power Input Marking requirements in IEC 60601 and IEC 60950

Hi all,

The equipment is designed to be connected to an AC MAINS having any voltage between 100 V and 240 V.

According to Cl. 7.2.7 of IEC 60601-1, the rated input shall be given as a range (e.g. 2 A - 1 A).

In the case of ME EQUIPMENT for one or several RATED voltage ranges, the RATED input shall always be given for the upper and lower limits of the range or ranges, if the range(s) is/are greater than ± 10 % of the mean value of the given range.
However, equipment marked with only maximum rated input (e.g. max 2 A) is allowed according to IEC 60950.

equipment with a RATED VOLTAGE RANGE shall be marked with either the maximum RATED CURRENT or with the current range
In the case of ME equipment employs a stand-alone 60950 compliant SMPS which marked with maximum rated input only, does this constitute a failure?

Thanks,
Roland

If the equipment incorporates a stand alone power supply, it may be best to handle as a system under Clause 16. That way, little differences between the two standards like this don't cause a problem. It is allowed in 3rd edition that the medical device gets it's power from a 950 supply.

Yes, it is a good approach to consider the combination as a system.

I have seen many approved ME equipments with voltage range, but only maximum volt-ampere is given. For example: 100 V - 240 V, 240 VA.

It is not uncommon that, the volt-amperes for upper limit of the range (in this case, 240 V) and for lower limit of the range (100 V) are close (the current could be very different). For example:

100 V --> 2.2 A --> 220 VA

240 V --> 1.0 A --> 240 VA

Is it reasonable to give the maximum volt-ampere only?

Because the related test (power input 4.11) only has an upper limit (+10%), having one rating for 100-240V only can still comply. The requirements really only makes sense if the test in 4.11 has both upper and lower limits, for example +10%, -30%.
