Re: PPAP and the IMDS (International Material Data System) - What did I get myself in

Hi All,

Thats right Mr. / Ms. ScottK IMDS (International material data system) is the system to maintain and archieve the material information used for automotive products.

As you know PSW is one of the document required for the PPAP submisssion, In this document you also need to enter the IMDS ID. This IMDS ID needs to be submitted to the customer through IMDS protocol.

In order to submit the IMDS you need to be registered user and through this protocol you will be declaring the materials used for the product (especially automotive products). This provides the breakup of the substance used and the % of substances.

If the % of the hazardous substances crosses the threshold limit you also need to declare the application information i.e. why this is used in the product. This is automatically listed in the combo box for the required classifications.

If you still need any more information please let me know.

Re: PPAP and the IMDS (International Material Data System) - What did I get myself in

Thanks for the response Wes. Actually my company had the same concern, so your post has cleared the doubts for me.

I don't understand it as "liability" for damage down the road. The point is that of accessible data and traceability for users who come later in the supply chain. I'd be interested if anyone has a citation from a credible law firm or from a "court of competent jurisdiction" describing liability once an organization has truthfully disclosed the material analysis via IMDS. I see it as the kind of warning printed on ladders: "do not overload" "do not stand on top step" "do not use near electric power lines" etc. etc.

I see it as removing liability which might accrue for UNDISCLOSED materials which later are found to be dangerous. Kind of like the alerts I see on food packaging: "this product processed on equipment which also processes peanuts" - eliminates a victim of peanut allergy from saying, "you never told me there could be peanuts in this cookie"

I'm looking forward to a researched response about future liability with citations versus wild guesses.

Re: PPAP and the IMDS (International Material Data System) - What did I get myself in

My company is currently planning to register on the IMDS, so I haven't had any experience in filling out the MDS and am still trying to familiarize myself with the system. So my question is probably pretty basic but I hope someone can share their experience. In filling out the components, since our products are made from materials from other suppliers, the suppliers will need to fill out their materials as well right? What if the suppliers refuse to fill out the MDS? Should we fill it out for them?

Well they are just migrating the system to a new version as we speak. I am not sure if new users are put straight on the new system or not but, but be aware of becoming familiar with the current and then being moved to the new one. Not too many changes I don't think, but you have enough to learn as it is!

Chistina,

There are three possibilities for material MDS's.
1. The IMDS committee has created a huge database of materials that you can insert into your submission. The tricky part is finding the right search terms to find them.
2. Have your material supplier submit the material and send it to your company.
3. Make it your self only if the first two are not options. They state that you should only make MDS's for materials that you actually produce but that just isn't always possible. There are still a great many companies that refuse to use IMDS for a variety of reasons.
Good luck!

Be aware that the IMDS system is not intuitive in any way, and it's almost impossible for anyone to navigate it successfully without training. Training can come from an experienced user, or from IMDS-approved sources.

That being said, how you construct your own MDS depends on the materials involved and how much you know about them. If they're standard things like common metals and finishing materials (zinc, ecoat, e.g.) you can probably do it yourself by using matierals that have already been established in the IMDS database. Finding them can be tricky, however. You can ask your suppliers to provide MDS's but if they've never dealt with IMDS it's probably not going to happen. If they are IMDS users they might well have MDS's in the system already. Ask them about it.

Re: PPAP and the IMDS (International Material Data System) - What did I get myself in

Hi, Silentrunning,

I will try to clarify what it is and what is for in a concise way.

1) IMDS is a database for the vehicle end of life. Thus, when recycling a vehicle, european companies know if a part goes directly to a foundry (aluminum, steel, etc), or it requires an additional treatment for disposal (PCB with lead solder). Here, you report if the material, component is recycleable

2) IMDS was created in Germany for the german automotive industry and it has been implemented by almost all OEMs (I do not know about Russia, China, India). The OEMs are responsible for creating the big tree of all components used in the vehicle. Therefore it is a requirement to register if you are doing business in the automotive industry.

3) IMDS has harmonized its database not only with the european ditrective (ROHS), but also with the European Environmental Comission (REACH). Thus, a substance identified as hazardous or reportable is listed it its database.

4) IMDS company registration is very easy (less than 5 minutes) and totally free. Database is maintaned in HP servers.

5) IMDS creation of a material (aluminum alloy, steel, plastic resin, etc), semi-component (part not finished) or component (finished part) is also easy. The different International Material Committees have uploaded most of the alloys, plstic resins, etc. Also, major international manufacturers have uploaded their trademark materials (Dupont, Bayer, 3M, etc.), in order to facilitate its use for the manufacturers. When you create a component which includes a reportable substance you receive immediately a notice.

6) Training material and tips are free and available for download in the website. There is also free support by phone and email. There is also training scheduled in different countries in your language.

7) Finally, there is a directive (I do not remember its number), which is recommending that by 2015, 95% of the vehicle has to be recyclable/reusable.

Regards

Re: PPAP and the IMDS (International Material Data System) - What did I get myself in

This is very good information for those who aren't familiar with IMDS, but silentrunning posted in 2007 and we have to hope he found his way out of his dilemma by now. :D

A few observations: I've found the training materials that are available for download to be not very helpful, even as reference material. I've never tried the phone or email support. For the neophyte it's anything but easy.

You describe a semi-component as a thing that's not finished, but to clarify that, the semi-component category generally applies to items for which the final weight (as used in a vehicle) is unknown. Some items that are provided in bulk such as bolts or rolls of textiles and leather, or spools of wire, are considered semi-components. If I supply bulk leather to a seat manufacturer, I identify it as a sub-component. The manufacturer of the seat cuts it to size and in his assembly (his component), it's identified as a material with a specific weight.
