PPAP for a Family of Products

Hi everybody...

While doing an audit at the company i just started working for, I stumbled upon this...
This company manufactures fuses (of various types & amperages). For PPAP submissions I was told that the way they submit them to the customer is that they just PPAP against the fuse with the highest amperage and with this they consider that all of the other ones (lower amp) are covered.

The part does not change from one type to another…the only difference is a “dimple” made on the releasing mechanism of the fuse (it’s made big or small depending on the resistance needed)

Any comments? Is this valid?

It's not orthodox, but it's valid so long as the customer keeps accepting the PPAPs. One thing to beware of, however, is the idea of tacit approvals, which have a tendency to get auditors excited. What I mean by tacit approvals is the condition of not having explicit approval from a customer to deviate from the standard requirements.

In general, while different parts may have common documentation, it's a good idea to at least have a PSW for each part number.

Hi,

I can share my experience on that. We use the family approach for the PPAP and submit a PSW for a new model. Control plan, FMEA, Flowchart are generic. Only few documents explain the different models or variant. We currently have 4 families (4 PPAP). A family is based on the same type of product and functionnality. Variants are based on minor changes (ie output voltage adjusted by fuse on Die, specific cover marking per customer request).
It is working well. We have experienced about 20 years of audits without non conformities.

We also (whenever possible) do PPAP's for families of parts. Our product is welded tubing (either single wall or double wall), with the only difference between part numbers being the overall length that the tube is cut to. For a 'new' PPAP submission, I would submit the current PPAP for that tube diameter, plus the statistical analysis for the overall length.

So far my customers are satisfied with this.
