PPAP for catalog parts

Hello Everybody,
we produce electronic products using a lot of electronics catalog parts (and designed ones), we are tier1 or 2 for car/truck manufacturer (automotive IATF). Since it is very hard to get PPAP (just PSW) from big producers or distributors I would like to go deeply in detail
PPAP AIAG manual I read:
Applicability.

PPAP shall apply to internal and external organization sites (see Glossary) supplying production parts, service parts, production materials, or bulk materials. For bulk materials, PPAP is not required unless specified by the authorized customer representative.

An organization supplying standard catalog production or service parts shall comply with PPAP unless formally waived by the authorized customer representative.

I have a doubt
the authorized customer reprsentative is my customer or it's me since I'm the customer of my suppliers? I cannot see the "customer" reference

tks

The 'authorized customer representative' is the person who would receive the PPAP; i.e. YOUR customer.

Although you can waive anything that you wish, it is your customer who determines what THEY want and expect.

Hope this clears it up for you.

Hi,

please read PPAP handbook 4th edition page 17:

The minimum submission requirement for bulk material is the PSW and the Bulk Materail Checklist...

Must dissagree. If I will order something at my supplier, I am the customer and I will sign PSW as SQE (my role could be also authorized customer representative).

Starting to get Involved
We have several cases like this, where the Automotive Tier1 wants we requests a PPAP for a common adhesive in the market or an standard bolt (M5 for example) which is non automotive specific but a common part for any use that any company manufactures.

As mentioned before, those parts are intended to be used by anyone and are non-customized parts and most of them are sell by a distributors.
This is like to require a PAPP to Home Depot (for those in US or Mexico) for a nail, bolt or a nut...

What we usually do in case for chemicals (adhesives) is to require the technical datasheet to the vendor or download it from the webpage, most of them are available.

Of course there are some materials that are not available to the public in low volume packaging and those "common" materials are mostly sell in big volumes for industrial usage but those materials are still standard off the shelf materials, in some cases those companies (DuPont, Bayer, etc.) might have more technical datasheets and even IMDS records but is not always available and it depends on the material.

Another possible action is to request all customer requirements to the sub-tier supplier and wait for:

1.- Sub-tier supplier accept to provide all information for free.
2.- Sub-tier supplier accept to provide all information with additional cost to prepare PPAP (usual practice)
3.- Sub-tier supplier rejects all requirements.

This is the complete note from the IAG PPAP manual (look for note 4)

Applicability
PPAP shall apply to internal and external organization sites (see Glossary) supplying production parts, service parts, production materials, or bulk materials. For bulk materials, PPAP is not required unless specified by the authorized customer representative.

An organization supplying standard catalog production or service parts shall comply with PPAP unless formally waived by the authorized customer representative.

NOTE 1: See customer-specific requirements for additional information. All questions about PPAP
should be addressed to the authorized customer representative.
NOTE 2: A customer can formally waive PPAP requirements for an organization. Such waivers can only
be issued by an authorized customer representative.
NOTE 3: An organization or supplier requesting a waiver of a PPAP requirement should contact the
authorized customer representative. The organization or supplier should obtain documentation of waivers
from the authorized customer representative.
NOTE 4: Catalog parts (e.g., bolts) are identified and/or ordered by functional specifications or by
recognized industry standards.

BUT ALSO
You need to review Appendix F (Bulk Material - Specific Requirements)

As I stated before, you can try to get this but if the distributor or the company is not operating (in my case) under automotive rules you might not get this from them as they do know even know or understand the requirements...

What is not correct and cannot be done is to prepare and provide a PPAP by ourselves for those materials as we cannot accept any liability in case of any quality issue.

I forgot to mention, in my case all design and product specs. are customer property (built to print parts), we just get the materials to manufacture their parts based on what is defined at the drawing (metal, plastic resin, adhesives and others)

For resins and metals we do have PPAP from our suppliers as those are specific alloys and automotive resin formulations, but not for common-standard parts in the market...
