PPAP for Materials - Rolls of adhesive tape, rolls of films and sponge material

Hi

We sell raw materials such as rolls of adhesive tapes, rolls of films and blocks of sponge materials to our customer. Now the customer is asking a PPAP report from us, as requested by their end customer who is in the automotive business. Does anyone has any examples of how to prepare a PPAP for materials. We are buying all these materials from the materials suppliers and many of them has no knowledge of PPAP. Customer is asking for PPAP level 4. What reports or document should my provide at a minimum?

Does anyone has any examples???

As a starter - You must understand the APAP process and what role PPAP (Production Part Approval Process) plays.

The content of the level of the PPAP required is stated on the PPAP 'Warrant':

Level 1 - Warrant only (and for designated appearance items, an Appearance Approval Report) submitted to customer.
Level 2 - Warrant with product samples and limited supporting data submitted to customer.
Level 3 - Warrant with product samples and complete supporting data submitted to customer.
Level 4 - Warrant and other requirements as defined by customer.
Level 5 - Warrant with product samples and complete supporting data reviewed at supplier's manufacturing location.

Are you a distributor (aka 'middle man' operation)?

Are these actually going into the customers product?
If not then this sounds like an enthusiastic roll down of requirements.
Is it really the customer of the customer or an auditor or other party?

If these are specialty items then your supplier should be able to help.
If they are standard catalog items then there should be no real need for PPAP

Great questions from the previous three posters! I'll toss in :2cents: then sit back and see where this is going ...

:topic:I have seen requests from PPAP submittals from various industries, not only automotive. They all follow AIAG PPAP manual guidelines to some extent or another, though.

As a distributor, you do not add any value to the product, regardless of where it is used. All you are providing is the service of being the middle-man between the customer and the manufacturer (or other distributors/brokers). As part of your PPAP I suggest that you create a process flow diagram from receiving to shipping (usually receiving, inspection, storage, order picking, final inspection, packaging & shipping). The next step is to create a PFMEA and a control plan for each process/step. There is no sample product (how do you sample 'distribution'?), no need for dimensional layouts, no need for capability studies, no need for bulk material, no need for appearance reports. There might be a need for MSA and calibration if you are using inspection equipment as part for the receiving and/or final inspection. You might also need to submit product certs to demonstrate product traceability if required by your customer. The whole process seems useless to me but again sometimes requests for PPAP make no sense. Am I missing anything? :bonk:

:naughty: If your customer asks you to push the PPAP down to your suppliers you can say that you do not have enough leverage to do so.

OK, that's enough for :2cents:. I'm sitting back now ...

I'm not sure that PPAP applies to that material. Is that material going on to vehicles? There may be question of applicability here. I know of a die maker that was told he had to do a PPAP of his dies.

If the material is going on to either production vehicles, or to dealerships as part of a service part, then you need to get a copy of the PPAP manual from the AIAG.
