PPAP Levels 2 & 3 for a Distributor of Mechanical Components

We are a distributor of mechanical components and a customer has askled if we will source some parts for them. These are well established parts going back 10 years pplus.
We have been asked to supply them to PPAP level 2 or 3 ( depending on the part)
As a distributor is there a way for us to do this, or must we get the PPAP provided to us by the manufacturer ?

What your PPAP submission should contain is determined by whomever is asking for PPAP submission. There's no way for us to know what the customer actually expects, as there's a good chance that it's something other than the default requirements.

PPAP's full form holds the clue to your querry,which is "Production Part Approval Process".Since the approval process relates to 'Production of Part' in question,the domain naturally belongs to the Manufacturer and not to distributer.

What is the exact requirement in the submission warrant,regarding the PPAP Lot quantity,documents viz Control Forms,PFDs,WIS etcetra etcetra is as per the dictates of the customer.

If the customer accepts these documents from the manufacturer,routed through the distributor,its goody goody for you,because technically,you can not 'originate' this documentation.

This is how I percieve the given situation,other opinions are welcome.

The word "production" in Production Part Approval Process" refers to the end user's production, not the supplier's, necessarily. It's a process an OEM uses to approve their own production parts, hence it's not unusual for PPAP submissions to be required of distributors, and providers of services such as plating and heat treating which are not (strictly speaking) manufacturing processes.

PPAP Manual, Page 1, "Applicability", 2nd paragraph, states that: "An organization supplying standard catalog production or service parts shall comply with PPAP unless formally waived by the authorized customer representative."

Further: "NOTE 4: Catalog parts (e.g., bolts) are identified and/or ordered by functional specifications or by recognized industry standards."

Bottom-line: Any questions and concerns should be directed to the authorized customer representative and get her/his responses in writing.
