PPAP Requirements - Suppliers who are changing their Suppliers

Looking for opinions on whether to PPAP or not.

I have a supplier that has sent in PPCN's, notifications that they have to change two suppliers in there process due to closings.

One of their suppliers is a machining source to them. The other is a material supplier.

To me, I will receive the same assembly I always have and the changes will be transparent. There is no change to material, fit, form, or function to my assembly.

Is there any reason for me to request a PPAP to my Purchasing group? Of course they have to receive PPAP's from their new suppliers.

What is the opinion here?

Re: PPAP Requirements

If you work where I do...you not only would have to get a PPAP but the entire testing process (everything done to validate the part at New Model start-up) would have top redone...

Gotta love overzealous R&D engineers....

You should get the PPAP documentation for both changes. As someone which sells this part to someone else it is your responsibilty to ensure that it meets specification. Your assurance that it meets specification starts at the PPAP documents. I would require submission supporting both changes.

I'm not sure how you can confidently state that the changes will be transparent if you know nothing about the suppliers in question. It might be true for a material supplier, but machining is a target-rich environment.

Of course, a lot depends on your direct supplier's methods of qualification, but the purpose of PPAP is to provide evidence that a supplier understands the requirements and is capable of fulfilling them. Why would you not want that evidence?

I agree with this and Jim Wynne's answers - they set forth the reasons why you should do it very clearly. Note, the PPAP updates from your suppliers to you may, in some cases, just be partial updates - the relevant documents needed to validate the new source. They don't have to do a full new 19 part PPAP. However the new sub-suppliers should give a full PPAP to your direct supplier, and they should use it to validate the new products.

Your customer(s) may also have requirements for you to inform them whenever you are changing sub-suppliers (prior to the change). This is common in automotive.

Based on past history with supplier process changes, I would definitely recommend a PPAP submission which focuses on the change(s); not necessarily the entire 19 parts, but something to show due diligence in assuring that your supplier is continuing to meet your requirements.

Don't neglect informing YOUR customer as well; depending on their particular requirements, they may want notification, evidence of conformity, or even (it happens) a completely new PPAP submission from you. Better to find out now than later.
