PPAP Submissions for Thermoplastic Resins (Bulk Material)

Carol I

I hope this is the correct thread for a related PSW question - if not, please redirect me. :)

I am fairly new to the automotive industry, and I am working on several PPAP submissions for thermoplastic resins (bulk material). My company has been reluctant to provide any information in the PPAP packages, and informs customers that they do not have to provide this info since we are supplying bulk rather than parts. The standard PSW that they have been providing customers has all of the submission levels, as well as the declaration, crossed out, and claims that they do not apply to bulk. Naturally customers are not happy with this, and are demanding at least a Level 3 submission.
It's my understanding that we need to provide the PSW or at least a bulk requirements checklist, and that the customer is the one who determines what level of submission they require. I am at an impasse between the customer's request and my company's policy. What exactly is implied by the term "warrant" in the PSW? Does checking a submission level bind us to all the requirements of the PPAP manual?

Thanks for any insight you can provide.

These are issues that should be agreed with the customer basically at the review of customer requirements (contract review ) stage.
Is your company TS certified? If so then you must provide PPAP as per the customer requirements or in an audit face a non conformance.
If the material is specified by the customers customer then you could refer to this approval Product approval process
The organization shall conform to a product and manufacturing process approval procedure recognized by the
In the end if the customer does not get what he wants he will probably go elsewhere

Thanks Howard!
Yes we are TS registered, so the standard reference you provided is very helpful. Our resin is usually not specified by the customer's customer (or OEM).
There is a lack of understanding here of the warrant itself, and the checkoff of the submission level. It seems that this checkoff is only an indication of what our customer requested to be submitted in the PPAP package (samples, data, etc.) and is not binding to the requirements of the PPAP manual. However the declaration would be the section that states the supplier's commitment to the requirements of the manual. Is that accurate?

Morning Carol I,

I too work for a Thermost Molding Company that provides product to the Automotive sector that is from Bulk material.

Everything that you have been told so far is accurate to my understanding, additionally you may want to consider the AIAG manual as a loose guidline - but the OEM's will tell you what they want, and are sometimes forced to request additional information due to government regulation.

It is difficult to get certifications from many bulk material suppliers (many of whom are overseas) as this requirement is being made more often and the customer will go someplace else if you don't or can't get it.. Many bulk suppliers are getting wise to this and are charging an additional fee to certify the material.

The Warrant (PSW) is your guarantee to the customer that everything in your PPAP submission is true and accurate - this is a legal document that can be used in a court of law to determine liability in the event of something going wrong with the part in the field.

Your PPAP when signed off by the customer means that they are taking a certain amount of liability for your process including materials which makes them look more closely - I would reference the issue between Ford Motor Company and Firstone years ago.

Wait until you get to the IMDS submissions - The OEM's are now demanding IMDS submissions for materials used in the process but not part of the final vehicle - like a simple shipping sleeve that is discarded after assembly - due to government regulation. just try and remember regardless of the anyone says including the AIAG - Customer requirements are just that - requirements - and your companies view is becoming less tolerant than in the past.

Good Luck,
