Pre FAI production terminology

Hi all,

Are there industry-specific terms for articles produced prior to the first articles for FAI?
I've heard terms such as conceptual, prototype, red label parts, functional test articles, first article tests etc. but am unsure which of these are required and are standard terminology. Perhaps there is a reference document that clarifies such parts?

First Article per AS9101D is:
". . . a representative item from the first production run or a new part or assembly . . . "

Anything else you mentioned there are simply terms that some companies have picked up to suit their own needs.

Hi Jim, thanks for the feedback.

Surely there are a bunch of pre-production parts and stages that are produced during design qualification and subsequent certification?

Prototype and pre-production are common terms. As Jim said, some companies use their own terms and you can often find them in the SOW or other contract language.
