Primary Failure Modes in a Production Line - Pls help a new member

I am new here at Elsmar Cove. I am a student working on my final project primary failure modes in a production line. I've never done anything on failure modes before. Began "googling" the topic and i'm mostly led to FMEAs and this forum.
I've looked at previous threads in this forum. Most of the discussions are really advanced. However, i'm gaining understanding bit by bit on FMEAs.

Please could you assist me on how i can go about my project and perhaps post valuable links that give a good introduction about failure modes: classification and calculations.

Thank you.

We need a bit more information to be able to help.

For example, what type of production line? What processes are in it? Different processes have different failure modes.

My suggestion is you learn about FMEAs. There is an old, but still valid, tutorial here:

FMEA - Failure Modes and Effects Analysis

I am supposed to analyze a production line such as a bread production line, brewery or something close. Do a classification and calculation of the primary failure modes therein.

I've looked at the tutorial posted by MARC. It helpful in learning about FMEAs.

Please I would like to know if there are other methodologies of calculating and classifiying primary failure modes besides FMEA? I saw something about Reliability Block Diagrams this morning. Didn't fully understand it. Is it a brother to FMEA? If yes, does FMEA have other brothers (methodologies i mean).

THANK YOU.

a clarifying question or two:
what do you mean by 'calculation'
We could use a little more context: what is the purpose of the project - what is the deliverable - what class are you taking that is initiating this project - what has the instructor taught you that would help you in this project - what training objectives is he/she trying to concentrate on?

This could be very simple, depending on the purpose of the project you may not need to do a full blown FMEA:

failure modes are ways in which a function can fail. (they are not causes and they are not effects)

there are 4 basic ways a function can fail:
  • complete failure
  • partial failure
  • intermittant failure
  • unintended failure

here's a really simple example:
one of the functions of a light bulb is to emit light.
so what are the failure modes:
  • no light emitted
  • dim light emitted
  • light 'blinks'
  • light emits on some insertions and not on others
  • light is too bright
  • light is wrong wavelength (color)
  • ...etc.

Hello all,

I've been working on my project and trying to narrow it down as much as possible. Now the project would be centered on a Flour mill. The topic now is
Classifications and Calculation of primary failure modes in a flour production line.

My objectives are to establish the various failure modes in a flour production line, evaluate the efficiency and reliability of its manufacturing systems and improve the operations management.

Mr Bev D and everyone hope this information is more useful now.

Thank you.
