I have worked in three different companies and have also witnesses customers using a revision history on drawings beginning with "NC" or "-" for No Rev. The company I am currently at uses "A" as their initial release. Any problems with ISO when using a revision system like so?

Thanks!:thanx:

Nothing in the standard that specifies methods.... you can use whatever you want as long as it´s coherant....letters, numbers, combination of the two, dates, etc... it´s up to you

Remember, the system is yours (your organizations) and not your auditors, your CB or "ISO´s").

Hello JKelley,

No problem. Whatever works for your organization. By the way, ISO does not prescribe a particular method for indicating revisions.

Re: Document Revision History- Drawings

I responded with a question regarding this in your other post...
I guess this answers that question.

Direct answer: ISO Quality Management Systems do not address the method of numbering documents.

In point of fact, organizations may number or not number, depending on what makes sense to them to prevent using obsolete documents in preparing products or services for customers.

Modern computer programs can keep track of unique documents regardless of how they are titled or numbered, as long as there are no duplicates and the program prevents you from creating a duplicate with an on-screen warning (very similar to trying to save a Word document with the same title as a previous document.)

It may help to understand most numbering systems were created in an era of hard copies versus electronic copies. The numbering system made storage, tracking, and retrieval more efficient than continually resorting filing cabinets according to an alphabetical system.

For reference to how other organizations number their documents, take a look at the ASME Standards, especially Y14.35 Revision of Engineering Drawings and Associated Documents:
Y14.100 - 2004 Engineering Drawing Practices
Product Type: E-Book
No. of pages: 47
Description: This Standard establishes the essential requirements and reference documents applicable to the preparation and revision of engineering drawings and associated lists. It is essential that this Standard be used in close conjunction with ASME Y14.24, ASME Y14.34M, and ASME Y14.35M.Price: $110.00
