Which standard are we complying to? And at what level within the plant (typically level 1-2-3)? level 3 would be work instructions.

Let's see-- 5.0, 5.1, 1.1, 3.0, 3.1, 4.0, 5.0, 5.1...
I'm getting dizzy. I don't blame you for wanting to correct that, but when you do, just do it so it makes sense. If you want to tie it back to the standard, that's fine, although unnecessary as I said earlier. Some people like to do that for the sake of outside auditors being able to relate the documentation back to the standard.

I think i can kinda follow the flow in thinking, but it doesn't seem like it would be very understandable unless you really sat down and thought about it. And with documentation, that should not be a requirement.

But rather than just re-numbering them, you might want to take a good look at what they are saying as well. Now would be a good time to make the whole thing a bit more user-friendly

Don't try to do too much at once. Since you have the luxury of already having the certificate on the wall, you can take this a little at a time. Just have a plan before you start.

I only ever number procedures if there's a benefit in doing so. Frequently, there isn't. Sometimes, it's unhelpful.

Often depends on the size of the documentation: the more there is, the more you maywish to use numbers. But it's only ever to help identify, and if that can be done without numbers, do it. I usually do without 'em, but I wouldn't want to in a large and/or complex documentation system.

I'm currently wading my way through the extensively numbered documentation of a relatively small system (but with way too many docs). Originally, all the numbering was exactly aligned to the clauses of ISO - the 1994 version. You know, procedure 1.1 for Management Review all the way through 3.1 (Contract Review) to proc #18.1 for Training. And then sub-numbering for quality "docs" and further sub-numbering for 'records'.

Problem: along came the 2000 version. So they added a bunch more docs. Perhaps it made sense originally (!) but it sure doesn't now. And was presumably a heap of work to maintain. (I'm getting rid of it & simplifying.)

Bottom line: do what works for you. Some people love numbers on everything, others don't.

I know many small companies that identify their procedures and documents solely by their computer file name and/or the procedure/document title. No numbers at all.
