Procedures necessary for things such as the floor cleaner or weigh scale

Is there really a need to have procedures drawn up for thing's such as the floor cleaner or weigh scale for ISO? We are currently in the process of getting it.

Could the absence of these procedures affect the quality of the product?

I do not they would effect the product quality in any way. The way scale could ship the wrong quantity of pieces if not used properly I'm thinking. The floor cleaner no way.

I would suggest a procedure for USING the weigh scale to measure out product....not for how to use the weigh scale in general....that's what the manual was for when you bought the scale.

If using it incorrectly can cause a mis-ship...document how to weigh and ship correctly.

Calibration of the piece weight scale is critical. A good idea is to weight several counts of the parts to make sure you have a good average weight. We used a piece weight scale for screws for kd items and it is amazing how much of a difference there is between lots of 50!

Just to add - Often covered by OJT. As an aside, I've always considered equipment manuals to be Controlled Documents. Not to mention, often they are "lost".

Agreed...I meant (did not say)... that you could cotrol the operator manual rather than rewrite it...thanks!

So basicly if "whatever" is not having an effect on the part there is really no ISO reason to create a procedure? Such as tool grinders, air compressor etc?

tool grinders, and air compressors need to be addressed in PM. Do not need procedures or at least I did not. We created a PM check list for PM for each machine ( daily , monthly, yearly etc) and had a full time person that did all PM

I've mentioned a number of times (though perhaps not here) that I don't have a procedure for operating doors or windows...the operation of a door is critical to my business (getting in the building to work)...but darned if I'm gonna write that document.
Operation of Floor polisher...no way.
Operation of Air compressor...no way (though both are in scheduled PM)
What parts to check and lube...yes, those are documented for PM.

Our scale (balance) document gives boundaries on how many decimals to trust, and which scales to use for which weight ranges...but it doesn't actually say anything like "turn it on, tare it, put something on it"...

Measuring Archimedes density using a balance?...yup, got that procedure.
