Process FMEA Revision Requirements - Every six months?

Re: FMEA Revisions

Is there a requirement of a revision of FMEA once in six month this was what one of our customers raised during the audit?
No, there is no six months review requirement (unless this is written in your customer specific requirements,). However, the FMEA records are to be treated as living documents and should be reviewed and updated when changes in the design/process occur. (For good or bad). In short: your FMEA records must reflect the current state of the Process and/or Design.

Hope this helps.

Just to clarify since you do not specify, you are referring to Process FMEAs, correct?

Re: FMEA Revision Requirements - Every six months?

FMEAs should be updated when:

- design of product is changed
- design of process is changed
- information becomes available that indicates a failure mode is missing, or a severity ranking is inaccurate, or a cause is missing, or probability of occurrence is inaccurate, etc. Such information may come about based on field failures, computer modeling, statistical studies, etc.

Some companies also require that when there is corrective action taken, the preventive action is documented in the FMEA whether the action be product (DFMEA) or process related. Also, for Critical or Key Characteristics which have high RPN numbers, it is hard to justify not applying improvement over a long period of time.

Re: FMEA Revisions

I dare to refer about some TS Auditor's reports asking of minimum yearly update or review PFmea of automotive components. In your opinion is this a right request or only a little abuse of power?

Re: FMEA Revisions

Unless it is a specific customer's requirement, then there is no specified time period. It is a living document and one should expect that it doesn't lie dormant with no activity. As a part of the continuous improvement process one could show a review of the PMEA documenting any actions to take no actions so to speak. Documentation of this sort would show that the PFMEA process is effectively implemented. Be careful that the audit trail doesn't go to the Nonconformance Log to see if all failure modes indeed have been captured and dealt with on the PFMEA.

It is most likely an auditor trying to push his/her opinion on the company, rather than allowing the company to meet the TS requirements as it requires and they deem useful for their organization. Unfortunately this introduction of auditor requirements/expectations happens a lot more often than it should.

Re: FMEA Revisions

ok, Dave. My doubt was if in any of the sacred books by AIAG there is a requirements about periodicity. I think anyway it's hard to claim that in a long period (1 year but maybe even in 6 months) no change has occured in any component (material, procedure, HR, machine) of the process in order to update last PFMEA.
