General discussion on why/how we use a subset of PMBoK compared to Six Simga projects.

Project Management Institute (PMI):
Each of the nine knowledge areas contains the processes that need to be accomplished within its discipline in order to achieve an effective project management program. Each of these processes also falls into one of the five basic process groups, creating a matrix structure such that every process can be related to one knowledge area and one process group.

The PMBOK Guide is meant to offer a general guide to manage most projects most of the time. The Guide recognizes 42 processes that fall into five basic process groups and nine knowledge areas that are typical of almost all projects.

The five PROCESSES: Initiating, Planning, Executing, Controlling and Monitoring, and Closing.
The nine KNOWLEDGE AREA: Project Integration Management, Project Scope Management, Project Time Management, Project Cost Management, Project Quality Management, Project Human Resource Management, Project Communications Management, Project Risk Management, and Project Procurement Management.

Six Sigma:
DMAIC process utilized in more than just "quality" initiatives.

Thanks for your thoughts and opinions on matter...

ETA: Welcome to the Cove.

If you just use DMAIC, which is nothing more than an unnecessarily bastardized version of PDCA, are you using Six Sigma? It seems to me that there are various types of statistical and other quality "tools" that are commonly used in program management, so I don't think that comparing the PMI body of knowledge with SS will get you anywhere.

To me Six Sigma is a "type" of project focused on data driven controls in a management system... and PMBOK is a reflection of the PDCA cycle specifically for considering tools and techniques that are valuable at each of the stages of a Six Sigma project or PDCA or any other project. It represents a body of knowledge which is not prescriptive in nature, but offers an array proven practices. How much of you you apply is based on the scope of the project and controls need to achieve results.
