Proper Poundage for Checking XX Tolerance Plain Plug Gages?

I'm rather new to the calibrating scene and have a question concerning checking XX tol plain plug gages. Our company procedure doesn't specify what poundage should be used when checking plain plug gages. I'm sure it is going to make a difference in trying to obtain an accurate size. Our Brown & Sharpe supermic has the capability to adjust the poundage, but no one here knows what it should be set to! Any guidance is greatly appreciated, thanks!

Good Morning,

If you look on page 167 of ANSI/ASME B1.2-1983 Reaffirmed 1991 you will find that paragraph A4.1.2 deals with this issue. It states that gage pins be checked at 1 pound. Granted this paragraph is talking about X and Y class, it stands to reason that if 1 pound is as light as your mic will go then all pin gages would check at 1 pound.

Hope this helps.

Yes, this helped greatly. A little more research (it took a while to find the right person!) in our database came up with the old MIL Std our procedure was based on basically says the same thing, 1 pound of indicator pressure for plain plug gages, unless the plug is over 3 1/2" then use 2 1/2 pounds.

Thanks for the quick reply!!! :agree1:
