Prototype Inspection - 100% Inspection on All Parts or just a Sample?

Hi folks, got a question.....

My company is just about to undertake prototype work for a prestige automotive manufacturer.....

I got a question about inspection requirements....

I offered 100% CMM Dimensional Reports for 3 parts out of a batch of 50 castings....they say this is not enough, they want 100% inspection on all parts....reason i dont want to go down his road is i dont want to end up having to do 100% dimensional inspection if the part goes into full production.... can you tell me what inspection rates you feel would be acceptable?

Thanx.

Essentially what the customer is unwittingly asking for is 100% inspection on 3 castings and 47 fudged reports. It's times like this when good data comes in handy; can you, based on reliable data (not conjecture) predict that the 47 uninspected castings will be substantially the same as the 3 inspected ones? If so, present the data to your customer along with the argument that there is nothing to be gained by doing 100% inspection on all of the castings.
You might also approach it from the direction of significant features; offer to do the 3x100% plus x more pieces for critical dimensions only.
If all else fails, make sure that the cost of doing 100% inspection on 50 pieces is captured in the quote.

We 100% inspect all prototypes. Once it goes into production we GP 12 (100%) visual (sometimes check fixture), off line, until our customer says stop.
When we quote, all this extra inspection is priced in.

We have an outide company do tooling for us. It's supposedly bought off for us by time it gets here. We still do a 30 peice 100% CMM verified R&R as part of our PPAP submission.

We always add PPAP to the quote. If the customer refuses to pay for a PPAP, we change it to "CMM Verification" with the same price and they usually okay it.

The key word is the customer wants...

The questions regarding the FAI or inspection need to be asked in the quotation phase..That way you get paid for them

Our 100% CMM inspection process is the same independent of prototype or production casting. However, for prototype castings we may perform destructive inspection to verify specific quality features at critical points.
