Quality as a Career Path with a Management Degree

Hi, I have a degree in management and currently going through my internship in the Quality Engineering Dept. in a semicon MNC. After 4months of internship (2months to go), I seems like enjoying my work in the quality fields (maybe I?m not exposed enough).

my concern is, with my academic background (only management degree), am I suitable to pursue quality as my career path? What option do I have in the quality fields?

Thanks a lot in advance.

There may be others more qualified to speak on this point but I'll still toss in my two cents worth. I am a quality management system consultant and auditor so my perspective is as someone from the outside looking in, but looking into very many companies. I also have an MBA.

In my opinion it depends on how well you can learn the technical side of the business. Although a technical background (engineering in particular) is highly desirable, it isn't always necessary. On a similar note some of the best engineers I know do not have an engineering degree and some of the worst do, even advanced degrees. True, though, generally speaking the best engineers are ones with degrees.

Your management degree is a plus, something that engineers sometimes struggle with.

How much support are you receiving on learning the technical stuff? How well are you picking it up?

Other comments are welcome.

Big Jim ... :applause:
What has been told by Big Jim is about the core technique, which makes the foundation over which the Management / QMS techniques are best built.
It could be Engineering, Pharma, Biotechnology, or such other, that you choose.

Thanks a lot for your reply Big Jim..
I’ve got a lot of support from my reporting supervisor, which he invite me to several knowledge sharing on the technical side of our process… So far, I did my studies on those topic to discuss (thanks Google!!) the day before and manage to catch up on what they are discussing…

But where or how do I start if I want to see quality as my career path?

All career path need not lead to being the CEO.
The best career path need not lead to being the CEO.
Professional satisfaction and professional growth are the key in career path.

Name a CEO of a Fortune 100 company that came from Quality
Although I can't name any who "came" from quality, I also know that "quality" in any organization is not just the activities of inspection, SPC, and the concomitant skills of manipulating a micrometer or CMM or doing the math for statistical analysis.

Over the years, I've seen many folks "dead end" themselves by becoming "specialists" in learning and meeting the technical details of the quality profession so that they ignore Deming's admonition of concentrating on a System of Profound Knowledge (SoPK). I can pretty much guarantee that most successful CEOs (regardless of Fortune listing status) HAVE absorbed and practiced the principles of SoPK, even if they never heard of Deming or SoPK.

:topic:
Let us not forget there are UNSUCCESSFUL CEOs who have literally destroyed their organizations when they ignore the principles of SoPK.

Firstly well done for finding quality interesting .. there are many that don't :D

As many have said the academic background is useful but not essential. You have said you enjoy the quality role but it might help you to answer your own question if you analyse a bit further to understand what it is you enjoy. This will help you decide whether your background might hold you back or not. If it is the technical side that attracts you then the lack of an engineering background might hold you back (if you want to get involved in this area specifically).

On the other hand it might be the business process side that attracts and there your management qualification will be a help rather than a hinderance and you can get a long way with quality management at the organization level.

Above all the main competence you will need to have (and continue to develop throughout your career) is the ability to understand processes and how they work. There are a range of skills that help here evenly distributed (IMHO) between technical and management educational courses.

Good luck at the start of your career. Keep coming back here to hone your skills! :)
