thanks

Don't! Not unless, in following your own training process, you have a) determined what competencies need to be demonstrated in the QMS or ISO, then b) have determined that training is the action needed to address any area where competency is lacking! Just to start throwing training at people, and NOT follow the very process which should be in place is counter-intuitive, isn't it? What's more, you open yourself to comment about 'not following the process'...

Why not have them work on something to improve their lives at work...

Slow periods are excellent times to do training, if top management will allow it. This does not mean that needed training should be neglected just because we are busy! Look at gaps and get people up to snuff. I had read years back that the average world class company spends 40 hours per year per employee on training and re-training. I know that the 3 companies that i worked did not even come close to this!! I know a company that training is not to last more than 10 minutes!?!? because 10 minutes is all the downtime we can afford.

If this is for your quality group, then the easy answer is to cover the basics!
1. Corrective actions
- Root cause investigations
- How to write an effective corrective action response (5 whys etc.)
- Updating supporting documentation (PFMEA, CP, Work Instructions...)
2. Internal Auditing
- How to identify problems
- documenting problems
- following up on corrective actions
3. SPC requirements (if used)
4. MSA
5. Defect analysis

What do you intend to talk about, surely not about things like management review, tracability, non-conforming product and design development for folks not involved in them are you?

I see organizations absolutely all the time training folks in dribble they have neither the need for nor interest in because it isn't on their plate..."If it ain't my business, why bother me with it?"

If you have "slack time" then come up with something of real value and don't spend it painting rocks

Painting Rocks is what we did in the Marines during "slack time" and everyone really, really enjoyed it:sarcasm:

Here's my :2cents: on this. If there is an identified need for training, the by all means have the training. If it is slow, people will grumble less about having to take time out of an overloaded scheduled for training (but there will still be grumbling). If there is not a need for training, but you think some people might use this down time to learn other aspects maybe offer optional training. Let everyone know what the topic is going to be about, lets say, internal auditing, then give them the option to attended or not. You may be suprised at how shows up and may even get some potential new interal auditors.

If your "slack time" is a result of customer dissatisfaction and this dissatisfaction is a result of poor quality, then by all means this may be a prime time to review your processes. If this slack time is due to something seasonal or beyond your control then there couldn't be a worse time to do it. It would just create a mindset that ISO and quality are gap fillers.

Re: training staff

Yea I know that mate but I deal with reality as well as theory. I agree that what I should have in place is some 'ready to go' training that has been identifed through a training needs analysis, signed off by management etc etc, but right now I've got an opportunity I want to take.

Na mate, but now that you mention it, it reminds me of a job I worked on some years ago; where I had to deliver a training session that had been 'designed' by a group of managers at a meeting that got off the rails, to a group of blokes on the tools and it was exactly the sort of thing your referring to above.

I even apologised to them at the start by saying that I appreciated that this is not going to mean anything to them. But, it did get interesting because we got into a general discussion part way though that enabled me to get into things that did interest them about management theory e.g. McGregor Theory x and y. I actually won a couple of points that day - cheers.
