I work in a regulated industry. We have only one MAJOR customer. Couple of years ago, we didn't have a Business Development Mngr., so when pitfals occured - in the field or during the inspection in front of the customer, I was the one who had to respond to the customer about the quality problem.
To develop the market of this major customer, and to grab other markets that it could offer, and to maintain our position with this major customer, we hired a couple of years a business development manager.
Now, every time something happen quality wise, things must go through him ... EVERYTHING now is critical ... yeah ...
He used to mess in with the engineers from the R&D departement and now, I have this monkey on my back. It seems like censorhip must be apply ... That he has to filter "in case" something bad would be said to the customer. Like he is the only one that can apply risk analysis ... or the only one that has the "right judgement".
I endured him quite a bit last few months, tried to put "some water in my wine" like we use to say in French (I'm in the french-speaking portion of Canada). The fact is some frictions occured when he joined - but I can only note that he joined during a very difficult project.
But now, I see emails circulating and he talks about corrective action plan, preventive action plan (could be ok right ?) ... but the drop that got the vase to overflow is when I see mails with explanations about the root cause ...
What is the problem ? Is it a personnality difference ? The fact that he doesn't trust ... or he's trusting me as much as I trust him ? I'm an engineer for God's sake ! It's quite difficult have to let part of my quality ground to another ! Shouldn't he be concentrated on other aspects ? By the way, I'm very appreciated by the close customer representatives (customer quality rep and customer inspector).
To finalize the explanations about my I'm living, these things must also be taken in considerations to have the fullest advices :
- Defects he's reporting about to customer is a "special project" ... but everything is special right ?
- The customer reports - I don't know exactly why - the bugs through his door and/or the Project Engineer ;
- Although the customer is pissed off sometimes about quality issues (involving mainly, from my point of view, design), the customer doesn't involve its Quality Department (it's a large organization - government) ;
- Since we're a small business, I doubt that a job description exist for both (quality mngr. and Account Mngr.) ... so it would be difficult to move it to its proper ground.
What should I do ? Should I let it go ? Last couple of months have been very unsatisfactory so I try to leave this current organization. Would it be worthwhile to have this situation cleared off ? Should I concentrated my efforts / pride on other projects ? Should I discuss this with my boss ? We have to forget about discussing the issue with HR since the manager is one of the cause I want to leave (long story but he had badly influence the business from my point of view ... constraining expansion of the quality dpt and having opened the business door to some of its friends (consultants) to work on lean ... I presumed some $$$ in retribution were on order
