Yes, the 4 things you itemise are lifted direct from clause 8.4. But they're only minimum requirements and my reading of the original question was that the poster was looking for more than just 'the bare minimum'.

It might be worth considering what ISO 9004 has to say - for example,section 5 on it goes into considerably more detail on strategy and policy, including formulation and deployment.

True enough.

My point was that there are several ways to measure each of these and that it was worth considering alternative methods.

Along the lines you are suggesting, not long ago someone here posted a generic list of KPIs. When I'm back on my laptop I'll look for them and post them. It is finance oriented, not ISO oriented, but it still would provide good fodder for thought.

There was also this thread, where people responded to a poll on types of objectives they set (although it was skewed toward manufacturing and kind of ignored services)

My employer is also a contract shop. In addition to the things you listed we also track our production efficiency as a business objective, and ppm as a quality objective. The ppm measure is in two parts - quantity of parts returned by customers divided by overall parts manufactured, and quantity of returned parts actually dispositioned as non-conforming divided by overall parts manufactured. We calculate these measures quarterly, and as a total for year end. The quality engineers for our major customers love it.

These metrics would presumably only work for a contract shop whose main or sole business is manufacturing widgets for others? (As in not applicable to one where every job is unique, different or a one-off).

OEE is an excellent way to find what you are looking for. There are many templates and instructions for pursuing this.

I'll agree with DRM2u. Any metric which isn't directly tied to profitability and stated in dollars is worthless. I see way to many measurements for measurements sake. It is about turning a profit. Without profit, you're dead -- period. Good luck.

I understand why you asked your question, and it is not wrong, per se. But it is kind of like asking what the Elsmar posters think my life objectives should be. We can't answer it for you. We can only tell you what we do. Your Quality Objectives must be what your team decides their goals are. Evaluate your company and weaknesses, opportunities for growth, performance, customer satisfaction. YOU must decide what YOU would liek to achieve and improve if you want to get the company to rally around it. We can only share ideas in isolation.
