Re: Quality Objectives Ideas - Currently we have Scrap & rework, OTD, survey results,

What exactly do you mean by 'the other stuff' and by the 'heart and soul' of a company?

A company is a system not a living being and it has to be regarded as such, regardless of how cold and heartless it might sound. This system was created and exists to address the needs of its stakeholders. The needs and the stakeholders of a non-profit organization are different from those of a for-profit organization. As such, the company must identify its stakeholders and their needs, and the metrics have to reflect how well these needs are addressed. IT IS WRONG to assume or imply that the investors are the only stakeholders.

I firmly believe that all the metrics can be tied to the bottom line (not profit) of the company as they all have an impact on it. For the investors, the need is profit; take the profit away and the investors will drop the organization like a hot potato. For the employees, customers, suppliers, society, etc the needs are other than profit but they still tie to the bottom line. For example wages, training (result of turnover, new technology, etc), benefits, etc are important to the employees and yet can be tied to the bottom line. For the society sales, growth, postitive income translates into higher taxes, donations, etc; yet all these can be tied to the bottom line. So, as you can see, a profitable business is important to all stakeholders for the business to exist. Therefore 'all that matters is $$ and profit', like Jane put it.

If anyone cares to dispute that all metrics can be tied to the bottom line then please give examples of such metrics and why/how they cannot be tied to the bottom line. Also please provide examples of a for-profit non-profitable organization that lasted for a long time and met all stakeholders' needs.
Jane said it well with her comments about the "Balanced Score Card".

I don't see the word "specific" here.

Sorry, I don't care to engage.

I'm not looking for engaging in disputes/debates either, Jim. I just have an opinion and am open to change with the right argument. I value everyone's opinions although we might not always agree. :)

:nope: Me either.
When "firm beliefs" are laid out, disinclination to consider previous information raised, and format & type of response being dictated, further discussion seems pointless and a waste of time.

Re: Quality Objectives Ideas - Currently we have Scrap & rework, OTD, survey results,

You can ignore the need to make a profit all you want. You can do all the fancy measurements you want, but if you don't trun a profit you won't be around very long. My point is, if your going to measure it, you may as well put it terms of profitability. Take one of the favorite measurments -- on-time delivery. Knowing that I am 95%, 98% or 100% on-time is worthless. Wouldn't it be better to put it in terms of dollars outstanding? I could be 98% on time with that 2% late representing $100,000 or $100. The first amount I might want to do something, the second probably not. Good luck.
I don't think we are saying profit does not matter. It clearly matters and is fundamental to a business, and no one promotes that concept more than I do. However, it is not the ONLY metric. To insist all metrics must measure toward profit will either eliminate other important criteria, or strain every metric to look like it is measuring toward profit.

What other important criteria? And why is it "important?"

Well, you can start with customer satisfaction, complaints, regulatory issues and concerns, environmental considerations...there are probably more, but this list can demonstrate the point. And, obviously, all of these are important.

Remember, I stated that I STRONGLY promote the principle that ISO supports a focus on profit, but it is not the only thing. A lot of companies lost market share because their focus was on profit to the expense of customer satisfaction (which of course leads to profit).

Re: Quality Objectives Ideas - Currently we have Scrap & rework, OTD, survey results,

Anybody makes Business (primarily)to make money. Absolutely no doubt. But when it boils down to fixing Metrics for the Organization, two or three interlinked factors comes into the picture(If I were the CEO)

- Profit (Contextually, it is also avoiding loss)
- Sustenance
Remember, today We can make 'Dollars', but tomorrow can be a different ball game altogether. Any Organization that does not adapt to the Market trend, that does not forecast the Market, that does not improve the technology, and some more may not profit on a longer term.
- Social responsibility
How many times We come across Organization failing to focus on the satisfactory level of the Society, Employees (& Politicians) and losing money in the form of Strike, lay-off, etc. Hence, it is extremely imporatnt to protect the interest of these sections and very few go a step further and try to protect Environment as well.
In the end, the Bottomline is Business.

would first acknowledge that the attachment with KPIs was totally helpful. Our company is going through restructuring and we all have to seriously look at our jobs and how they relate to the money side of our business. I attach my Balanced scorecard. Its open for review just to help me out. I oversee our Food Safety and Quality Management systems (ISO9001/HACCP).
