Quality Tech Skill and Comprehension Test example and help needed.

Does anyone have or know where I can get a skills and understanding test for my quality tech's? They are falling short in areas I think should be common sense. I want to set up a training program for them but I want to set it up based on their skill set. We are an injection/compression molding company.

Ken,

This is how you do this:
  • List what your Quality Technicians actually do. (Responsibillity and Authority)
  • Determine what skills, knowledge, and personal attributes the Quality Technicians must possess to perform these tasks safely, effectively and efficiently (Competencies)
  • Next, assess what they actually bring to the job. (Assessment)
  • Analyze the difference between what's needed and what they currently have. (Competency needs)
  • Provide training (or other means) to bring them to the required level of competency.
  • Assess the effectiveness of the training provided by observing them on the job.
  • Record these events.
Voila! Done.

Thanks for your reply. If I had my choice I would not have the people I do. I was hired into the position and basically the company took workers they thought were good and made them quality techs. Frustrating for sure. I was looking for a basic test that anyone had success with to identify weaknesses. If I asked them to do a gage R&R, only one of the 3 know what it is. I found a couple test examples on line, but out of the 20 questions they asked, there were only about 2 that they might understand a little bit. Outside training is out of the question due to lack of support. Trying to find a good way to win my uphill battle. :bonk:

I am sure that you are familiar with the expression: "If you think training is expensive, try ignorance." These folks will never reach the level of competency if no training is provided. Tests are OK in some instances, but all (written) tests do is measure knowledge retention, not necessarily the ability to apply. Contact your local community college and ask if they can help you. In North Carolina, where I live, Community Colleges have sometimes training grant funding available.

If you want to know what skills they need, you could use the CQT manual from the Quality Council of Indiana (includes test questions).

(I am not affiliated with them, but use their products. CQT primer

It is worth your monies.
