Quality's Authority - Company Moving In

Our company (A) has two buildings and is set to 'take in' another company (B) in one of them. It is a merger but top management has decided not to dissolve (B) as a legal entity so they are technically just 're-locating'. Both of the companies are ISO9001 certified but have different Scopes & QMS documents with (B)'s QM may or may not make the move.

I'm wondering what I should be possibly overseeing as the QM for (A). Would I be in charge of both quality departments if (B)'s QM doesn't stick around after the move?

I don't know how far quality's 'authority' reaches in this situation.

I don't think there's any compliance-based guidance here. Management will need to make the decision. Factors that need to be considered include competence (do you have the skills to take over as QM for B?) and bandwidth (if you already have a full-time role as QM for A, how could you take on B?).

@yodon - The tricky thing here is that the two companies will eventually merge together and be rolled into company (A).
- (A) Company Scope - CNC Machining
- (B) Company Scope - Fabrication & Assembly

- Will migrate to (A)'s ERP system

I just don't know if Quality needs to lend a hand in overseeing company (B)'s move in to our building as there's a 80% that there be no quality manager for (B).

I hate the 3 P's (Piss Poor Planning).

Maybe this is a good opportunity for you to volunteer to plan the quality-related aspects of the move? Might fit the "don't bring me problems, bring me solutions" category.
Maybe volunteering rather than just doing & asking for forgiveness later is the more appropriate route.

Whether you proactively volunteer or simply ask forgiveness, you need to plan. What's going to happen next is predictable. They will 'discover' the loose end after the fact and your organization will have to pick up the pieces.

And that's what I'm trying to prevent. Unfortunately, top management doesn't see it that way so I've decided not to ask for permission and just be proactively in the areas I know will be affected.

Yes, and you could merge the two systems into a seamless whole.

An essential part of the acquisition project that is often neglected.

Merging the two systems as a seamless whole works. I have facilitated a couple of them. In one case, the purchased company's name continued for marketing purposes, but all the quality documentation were merged together. The scope of registration was expanded to include both company names (make sure you work closely with your certification body to accomplish this).

I don't see how you could pull this off without support from top management.
