Does anyone know where I might find the R A tolerances for stainless steel finishes?
Are you asking about mill standards (i.e., standards for coil or sheet stock)? If so, a steel distributor should be able to help.

The finish I am asking is for coil stock. Our supplier said there are no ASTM standard only internal standards. Trying to find out if this is correct.

I assume you are talking about finishes such as 2B,3,4, BA, etc. As far as I know, your supplier is correct, there is no ASTM standard.

Yes, I am speaking of these types of finishes. I am surprised that there is no type of standard.

How about....

BS 1449, Part 4, and the Committee of Stainless Steel Producers, American Iron & Steel Institute

or

ANSI B 46.1

We use 2B, 3 and BA finishes here, but we inspect by visual inspection.

I assume it depends on your application, whether or not there is a spec covering the surface finish. Most of these finishes call outs are for commercial quality stainless, so there may be minimal governing specs.

This may seem to basic but does your customer have this info on dwg, spec, std, you are quoted to work this to?

I'd have to agree with posing this question. Surface finish I'd assume would be application driven and should have a corresponding specification by the customer for that application.

The Machinist's Handbook has a list of Ra value ranges that can be expected from different finishing processes, but I don't think that this list constitutes any sort of specification.

We are required to measure Ra surface roughness specified on customer drawings. Usually expressed with a value such as Ra 3.2 Max or 6.3Max
