R&R Studies - how many? per product?

I have a question regarding how to schedule R&R. For example, I have calipers, and 10 final inspectors that use this device, different programs/products thought. We measure stitch length. If one inspector is certified to use this caliper to measure the stitch length in the VW and Nissan products, I do not have to do a separate R&R because now he is measuring stitch length in a new product from Honda, right? if the person is certified, it does not matter if he/she measure stitches of 4 mm or 5.5 mm in different programs/product, their certification by the original R&R make them competent, right?

MSA, (in this case GR&R) is not a "certification" process as such. It's used to determine whether a given measurement system is suitable for measurement of a particular feature (or suitably similar features). They "system" includes operators, devices and parts. Operators of typical skills should be used. If, via the study, the system is found to be acceptable, there should be no reason to repeat it unless something substantive has changed. Whether your parts for different customers are suitably similar is a decision for you to make.

Jim is (as usual) absolutely correct. I would, however, add a comment in regarding this. When using an MSA study from a 'similar' part you need to ensure that the tolerance used for the MSA study is the SMALLER of the two. This ensures that your measurement system is able to adequately discriminate between a good and bad part.
Another thing to consider is the overall size of the feature. If it is 30mm ± 1.0mm on the first part, and only 5mm ± 1.0mm on the second part, you may want to consider repeating the study.
And of course, your customer specific requirements will dictate any specific nuances that they may have.
