Hi

Our company is about to add rechargeable battery to the device configuration. We did not need to deal with this isuue before...

What recommendations do you have for controling and maintaining batteries in device (when still in the warehouse) and those which are intend to serve as spare parts.

Thanks, Arie

Re: Rechargeable battery in medical device

Arie,

I think you had better contact your battery supplier for advice. How batteries behave depends on the type e.g. lead acid, lithium, metal hydride etc (which is yours?). One thing is for sure, you do not want them (regardless of type) to fully discharge for what ever reason – which could happen in prolonged storage with exposure to high temperatures etc. I do not know whether this helps, but we supply a medical device with rechargeable batteries (Nickel Hydride) – though not specifically as spares (though they can be). Before the battery is placed in the device and shipped out, we run it through 5 charge/discharge (not fully) cycles then fully charge it (using an e-Station BC8 unit, which is suitable for all battery types). This ‘conditions’ the battery prior to use.:2cents:

Re: Rechargeable battery in medical device

Thanks, Steve

We're going to use lead acid batteries.

I realize that the first step should be keeping the batteries out of the devices in stock and maintain them until they need to be assembled to the device (for shipment).

As it seems, we should establish maintenance procedure which will include treatment when in stock and treatment before getting into the device for shipment.

Best Regards, Arie

There are shipping regulations for batteries as well. I have attached a recent document I was reading and I know it does not pertain to the lead batteries you will use but perhaps you can find some references in it as a starting point.
I know the TSA at our airport has regulations on batteries going by plane.
Good luck, sorry I don't have more info.
