Reference Source for Polarity Symbol

Hi,

does anybody know what is the reference for the polarity symbol resp. in which standard it is mentioned or in which database it is listed?

- C + (positive polarity)
+ C - (negative polarity)

I'm not an electrical engineer but my research found this Wikipedia page that references IEEE Std 91/91A and IEC 60617-12 and shows symbols.
