Hi

I would like to know your opinion about if you feel that when referencing a document or a process, it is really mandatory to point to the applicable version.
I understand why it is necessary but is it really mandatory? or are there situations when we just can reference to the document without point the applicable/reference version?

Thank you for your opinion!

When you refer to a document ( also of external origin) in another controlled document or procedure, you should report the title as well as the version, released date and document identification number inside your system, if there is not the hyperlink to the current version.
I think that using hyperlink could facilitate the immediate consultation of the linked document, instead of making a research inside your documention control system.
What you said is not mandatory according to the clause 4.2.3 of ISO 9001, but you can choose the way to proceed establishing the requirements of the organization in your mandatory document control procedure, to meet the intent of the above clause. Hope this helps:bigwave:

If your document control system ensures that only current versions are available for use, there is no need to refer to version or revision levels. In fact, reference to revision levels can cause problems because all referring documents have to be updated when new versions are released.

One exception would be when you want (for whatever reasons) a particular superseded version of a document to be used. It happens sometimes.

In my opinion, No is not mandatory and in fact I would advise against it for the simple reason that every time you revise a downstream document you force yourself to revise the upstream documents that refer to it as well. Which just creates unnecessary extra work.

If you have an effective Document control system in place then the only version of a document available to those needing it should be the current one. All previous versions should be unavailable.
