Reliability Lifetime Requirement Demonstration Test

Hi,

I would like to conduct a reliability demonstration test for a product to ensure that the product will meet lifetime requirement. I would like to keep the sample size small (around 10) and test it until failure for sever user. The product is a consumer product (vacuum cleaner). I would like to understand which is better? 'having a 90% reliable product at 50% confidence interval' OR 'having a 50% reliable product at 90% confidence interval'. Is there any recommended practice in the industry?

It is basically like asking which is better: I think I have a reliable product (R90 @ 50%C) vs. I'm positive I have an unreliable product (R50 @ 90%C). The latter will result in a high warranty rate or drop in sales.

Are you accelerating the test by running the product continuously? How are you simulating the load on the beater bar? Preventing motor overheating?

ASTM has some test standards related to evaluating product life for Vacuums. Here are 2 to look at: ASTM F1038 and ASTM F555. Perhaps one of those standards will assist you in developing an appropriate life test.

Thanks Miner and I guess this explanation is very easy for the management to understand :) The test will not be accelerated and running under normal stresses, we have a test bench which will be used to simulate the loads. The test will run with start-stop cycles to prevent overheating.
