Requirements for ANSI Z540.3 Compliance as End User of Calibrated Instruments

I work for a company that manufactures unique ultrasonic testing calibration standards for the aerospace industry. To verify each standard we produce, we use a CNC optical measuring device, which we send out to be calibrated every six months.

One of our customers is now requiring compliance with ANSI/NCSL Z540.3, using the following language: "Supplier management systems for the control of monitoring and measuring equipment shall meet the requirements of ANSI/NCSL Z540.3 using the Handbook for the Interpretation of ANSI/NCSL Z540.3."

I've read through this Handbook several times now, and I still do not fully understand which portions of it we need to enact to achieve compliance, other than ensuring the external calibration lab calibrates and certifies our measuring equipment to Z540.3 compliance, and specifying the calibration interval. The Handbook seems focused on the labs performing the calibrations, not on the end users of the calibrated instruments, so I am looking for advice on which portions would apply to us as an end user, if any.

Any knowledge, resources or advice you can share would be much appreciated! I'd also like to mention that I'm not a metrology expert by any means, just a machinist who is in over his head.
