Does anyone know if there are any requirements (ISO or otherwise) for retention of returned goods regarding complaints after investigating the returned product? Or can they be disposed of right away?

I have never seen a timeframe requirement, but if asked I would find myself hard pressed to come up with a reasonable explanation why it's a good idea to not keep a customer return until the investigation is complete. Could be just me though...

There is no requirement. However, I keep mine until the ink dries on the Debit or the Credit and the Corrective Action, if applicable is closed. Many times I get parts back that are Good, and in order to fight :argue: for the Credit or reversal of the Debit, you may run into a situation where you'll need physical evidence, not just Records. :2cents:

We state on our Failure Analysis Report that unless prior arrangments are made, parts will be scrapped after 30 day from the date of the report. That way, the customer has the opportunity to have materials returned if they so choose.

I've never seen any ISO requirement for returned goods retention.

MEDDEV 2.12-1 rev. 5 section 5.3.2 requires you to provide 10-days for the competent authority to perform an investigation of a device involved in a reportable incident before the manufacturer performs any investigation that may alter the device in such a manner that it will affect subsequent investigations. This is the closest thing to a requirement for retaining returned goods that I am aware of.
