Requirements for Sub Components in a Purchased Assembly

Getting it Right

#1
I am working on an approval for a wire harness purchased as an assembly. What are the PPAP requirements for the components (connectors, terminals, wire, tape, tubing) within the harness. I am being told that a signed PSW for each of these is not enough for the approval. Note, the wire harness supplier has submitted performance testing for the entire harness from an accredited lab. I have been arguing this with the plant for days that the wire harness supplier is responsible for their suppliers and that the PSW is evidence that the PPAP process was followed and approved for the sub componets in the assembly we purchase. Before I get in more trouble what are the requirements for purchased assemblies and where is it stated? I worked with parts from a supplier that submitted to an assembly and I never heard of submitting level 3 PPAP for each of the sub supplier's components. The PSW were always enough. Thank you.

Welcome to the Cove. :D

The level of detail depends on a number of factors. Are you the end user of the harness? Wire harnesses always have dimensional requirements; have you received a dimensional report? How do you know that the requirements for the specified wire, insulation and connectors have been met? Manufacturers of wiring harnesses usually have some sort of board that may be used as both an assembly fixture and a "checking aid," and there are PPAP requirements for that as well.

More information would be helpful.

I agree with you. PSW for Tier 3 parts (e.g. tape, connectors, wire) should be sufficient.

All the PPAPs that I have reviewed in my career only have the PSW for the lower Tier parts.

(side note: How much paperwork should we collect? Is there mistrust in the supply chain? If you get the detailed PPAP papers, are you supposed to then review and disposition?)

Speaking as someone who reviewed thousands of PPAP submissions for an OEM, I never wanted to see PSWs, which are mostly worthless. I looked at it this way for assemblies: If there was a design record requirement for which a sub-tier supplier was responsible, I wanted to see evidence that the requirement was met. This might take the form of a dimensional report, or evidence that a particular catalog item was purchased and used, or even test results if the design record specified characteristics that should be tested. My view was/is that my top-level PPAP package should contain all of the evidence necessary to confirm conformity of the assembly.

I always discouraged the first-tier suppliers from sending in complete PPAP packages from the sub-tiers. I didn't want to see flow diagrams or PFMEAs or control plans, etc. I figured it was the responsibility of tier one to review and file that stuff. Just the facts pertaining to conformity to design record requirements.
