Hello all. I am a Q.A. Manager at a small company here in Florida. Our products get labels put on them. The labels contain a Part # and some other info.
Question is, do thse labels need to be controlled as templates or forms...or do they need to be controlled at all???

Related to product?

Yep, either as a document or record. either way will elicit discussion. I say both because they are subject to be changed (revised) and they provide evidence of how the product was marked in the past prior to any change.

In common practice Forms are considered document until they start being used and then they become a record.

I agree with you Randy, but let me follow this up some more. We have as many labels as we have products, which is to say, several hundred, all on different products, with different information. Some customers required things like PO numbers, serialization, bar coding, part numbers, (thier own, not ours), and things like that. So each label is different.
Would it be okay to standardize the information as a form in a generic sense?
Such as a document stating " all labels will follow the format MM/DD/YY, Customer part number, our part number, revision, ship date, etc". Or do you see it as every part having a controlled label form individually?
Product identification may be through a completely different part number and revison than what goes on the label. Or is the technical specification of the label provided by the customer the form?

Hey you can do whatever you want as long as you meet customer specifications, any regulatory requirements as applicable to each product and you control the whole process.
