Thanks to everyone who contributed! :thanks:

Sorry, too young to remember the typewriter days!

We are implemeneting a system of document control that is linked into our CAD.

It has a vault whereby all documents are checked in and out. When it is checked in for the first time, it becomes Version a.0. Then subsequent check outs result in a.1, a.2, a.3 etc.

You can then release the document and this updates the letter used to b, c d etc..

So Iw ill try and implement a system that is consistent, using this computer control program.

The program is very good as it provides complete tracability for both CAD models/drawings and general design and process documentation.

I will still welcome any other products though! CHEERS, from a FREEZING UK!!

Your revision/version numbering system is confusing to me.

It seems you are confusing an "audit trail" of how often and by whom the document is accessed with a "revision history" how often and by whom the document is modified.

Perhaps you miswrote what actually happens, since in common usage, the revision/version number only changes when the document itself changes.

If so, or if there is another explanation, please update us.

Sorry,

Maybe it would seem slightly confusing.

The vault holds the documents:

1. Create a document.

2. This document can then be 'Checked In' to the vault, but this does not release the document. This document is a.0, but remains unreleased. This document is accesable in 'read only' at any time and this will not affect it's revision history.

3. You can then 'Check Out' the document, if you are going to edit it in any way. Checking it out updates the revision, thus - a.1. But, the tracability comes because a.0 still exists, but is marked as being 'Not the Latest Revsion'.

4. The document can go through an official release process that once complete, will effectively be, a (the first release). I know this may seem confusing with just an explanation, but I am very confident that this system provides complete tracability and as previously mentioned in this thread, works well along as it is implemented consistently.

Revisions and Engineering CM

I'm dealing with a simlar problem.
We have the following process in place regarding Versions and Revisions.

A revision is a change to a part or related documents that does NOT affect the form, fit or function of the part to the point where different revisions are interchangeable. Revisions are alpha (A, B, C, D etc)

Any change that affects the form, fit or function requires a new VERSION. The versions is the last two digits of the part number, ie. 2223-02 means version 2. The revision level is not part of the part number because the idea is that 2223-02 rev A and 2223-03 rev B are interchangeable.

Now heres where my question comes in. When it comes to configuration management and managing the BOMs, do you automatically update every BOM with the latest revision of a part. For example if 2223-03 rev A is used in 12 different assemblies and I create a new revision 2223-03 rev B, should I automatically updated each of those 12 assemblies to reference the latest revisions or do the 12 assemblies need to go through a change process (ECN) that updates the BOM to use the latest revision of 2223-03?

Wow! that was a mouthful.... Hope someone can offer a little more insight.

Thanks,

xtrakbandit
