Comparison

Rework:

I have an assembly with a stripped screw. I replace the stripped screw with a fully conforming screw and scrap the stripped screw.
Repair:

I have an assembly with a stripped hole. I drill out the hole and use an oversize screw after re-tapping.

This is not rework but replacement regardless of what happens to the existing part. This is simply a replacement. Simply put..Rework is that action that is above and beyond the normal processing that is required to correct a nonconforming aspect of the part, where after the action in completed the part is 100% compliant to the drawing or specification requirements.

While you may need documented instructions to perform a repair this does not necessitate a change to the part.

Who really cares? :notme: Both are bad and must be prevented from happening.
In the aerospace sector, there is a huge difference. For example, AS9100 prohibits a supplier from dispositioning a nonconforming product for repair, without formal approval from the design responsible organization. Many times, a repair will have implications in terms of product life cycle or reliability. In critical applications, it must not be taken lightly, as Marc suggested.

I understand, but it took 2 years and 37 posts to get to this point. The initial discussion appeared more like a hairsplitting exercise in semantics. ;) Hence my comment.

Practically speaking, only repair needs design approval. Rework does not. So routing the NCR to the person authorized and competent to approve the dispositioning critically depends on the rework versur repair decision.

Occasionally designers include approved repair specifications with the product specification. This may simplify things but may also signify a chronic problem with the design of the product or control of the realization processes.

Agreed, both rework and repair are wasteful and may be worthy of immediate corrective action to stop recurrence.

CAROLX has it. If you rework the product, you bring it back to design specifications. If you repair it, you have altered it in someway but it still meets form, fit or function. If you fill the hole as suggested, you would weld it which changes the structure of the material and the discoloration is apparent. You can rework a product and the customer would never know the difference. As stated, repair typically requires customer approval.
