Hello QA Pros:

What would be some of the risks and opportunities that could be associated with the purchasing dept. ? how are other companies addressing this risk based thinking with purchasing?

Can someone share a procedure or document of the approach? thanks

1- To have just one supplier for your raw material which is very important
2 T not specify clearly to your supplier your requirements, specially which are critical and
expensive.
3-Receiving poor quality raw material.

A few More :

* Placing order late with supplier ( "late" is to be defined in number of days , and from

* Placing incorrect order with supplier

*Placing order with a "refused" (non-approved) supplier without clear authorisation to place it

A few ideas:

The purchasing department not following the proper procedures
The purchasing department not using SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and timely) data-driven metrics to evaluate suppliers
The purchasing department not removing suppliers - even when they pose a risk to the organization

When I read title of this thread posted in ISO 9001 sub-forum I see one, biggest risk - DEPARTMENTALIZATION. Clear evidence of missing process approach and lack of demonstrating process ownership. :D

When purpose(s) of established system process is determined, then first risk we should see is lack of process effectiveness - "We will not get through running this process what we wanted". What is a purpose of your "purchasing" process?

Good point.

At this moment I'm working on an interaction of processes document, and it leans heavily on departmental references. It does include inputs and outputs.

Is this approach fatally flawed? Am I just spinning my wheels?

One of such risk that could have serious implications with your outputs and perhaps even as your customer complaints is the supplier 's change control.
The risk that a supplier changes some input / process without your knowledge and consent in making the parts that has to meet your drawing and specification criteria, and that you are not able to detect it in your inspection or use.
Hence the change control agreements and methods to approve any change is vital in purchasing.
