Riveting - special process

#11
Hi optomist1, thank you for your very useful answer.
is the process a hand held pneumatic or semi-automatic tool?
indeed we use pneumatic handtool to forme the rivet's head after setting the rivet by hand in said hole. It is mainly part of maintenance and repair operations.

These results and samples could become part of the device build book or history for later reference?
it is the goal to make several samples to prove our worker's skill in the special process of riveting.

Thank to all of you for your answers, now i have clear and precise answers for my team who ask why riveting is a special process if you can control a part of the rivet after it is completely installed.

in the case of a standard rivet, the aircraft manufacturer made a control procedure for the deformed head of the rivet after assembly (visual control, measure the diameter of the head). But according to the definition of a SP, the resulting output cannot be controlled. That why I asked why this type of riveting is considered as a SP.
There might have been a lingering question about Special Processes. I am not a rivet expert, but I am an engineer. The purpose of a rivet is to hold together members of a structure, to resist a force. The purpose of the rivet is not to have a head of a certain diameter. The measurement of the rivet head is an example of an "arrangement" (the word used in AS9100 8.5.1.2) to control the strength of the joint, which is the design output which needs "control". Someone had to conduct an engineering study to demonstrate, with statistical confidence, that an installed rivet with a head of certain size and shape and maybe other visual criteria, that was sufficient to hold a force of a certain magnitude. The engineering study almost certainly involved pull testing to failure in a controlled experiment. That engineering study is what we call validation.
