RTY (Rolled Throughput Yield) - Use Poisson Distribution Calculation

I am glad here are so many friend with solid experience and knowledge, now i am confused for the following question:
Initially, we calculate the RTY use product of each FTY, but with Sixsigma training, the alternative calculation method is using Poisson Distribution, I tried to use different method to perform the RTY calculation, but the results are different.
Could anybody can help me to eliminate the confusion? Thanks in advance!

I haven't specifically seen calcuations using Poisson distribution, but presumably it related to how you deal with multiple defects on a single object. Typically the poisson distribution is used when a single part can have multiple defects, while the binomial distribution is used when there can only be only one defect.



For example, if there is an average of 1 defect for every 10 parts, and you run 100 parts through, you could either have
  • 90 good and 10 bad (for a typical binonomial-type process)
  • 91 good, 8 bad, and 1 double bad (for a typical poission-type process)
Both have 10 total defects, but the calculations would be slightly different if you can have two (or more defects) on a single part. The poission-type process has a slightly better yield, even though the defect rate is the same!
